•A new Prussian blue cathode rich of Fe2+ is synthesized by using K4Fe(CN)6.•CuHCF(Fe2+) delivers a capacity of 54.5 mAh g−1 with high cycle stability.•The lattice change of CuHCF is only 0.13% during charge and discharge.•Octahedral distortion in CuHCF is suppressed effectively due to low spin Fe2+.
