•PCM-based NPs co-delivering PTX, IR780 and GA are prepared via a facile method.•GA increases ROS and suppresses HSP expression, thus dually enhancing phototherapy.•Phototherapy enhances low-dose chemotherapy with extraordinary tumor inhibition.•PCM allows precise control of drug release by PTT to reduce the side effects.
