•Co3O4-CoFe2O4 heterojunction was prepared by solvothermal-thermolysis strategy.•Co3O4-CoFe2O4 sensor revealed excellent ammonia sensing performance.•The sensor based on the Co3O4-CoFe2O4 exhibited admirable long-term stability.•The gas sensing mechanism of Co3O4-CoFe2O4 core–shell spheres was proposed.
