Using an off-the-shelf platform to develop a gender-sensitive health care robot for older adults and chronically ill people

•In a case study social robots were tested for gender-sensitive interaction with older adults and chronically ill people.•A high level of usability is necessary for successful human-robot-interaction especially for older adults.•Social robots could be utilized to support administrative tasks.
