Association of fat mass index versus appendicular lean mass index with physical function – The Yishun Study

•Fat mass index is a stronger determinant of physical function than appendicular lean mass index.•Greater muscle strength abates the detrimental association between fat mass and physical function.•Interventions should target reduction of body fat and improving muscle strength especially in older adults to mitigate functional decline.
