•A coarse-grained CFD-DEM model has been applied to gas cyclone.•The unique “dust ceiling” and “strands” phenomena are reproduced numerically.•The forming mechanism of the dust ceiling is explained in terms of forces.•The effect of solids loading rate is studied numerically.
