•Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) exerts multi-directional effects favouring tendon healing.•Limited conclusions on its effect on Achilles Tendon ruptures.•We performed a systematic review to look at all the literature in its effects.•PRP injections for acute Achilles tendon ruptures do not improve medium to long-term outcomes.•Future studies incorporating the ideal application and biological composition of PRP are required .
