Compact, sub-nanosecond electro-optically Q-switched laser based on birefringence properties of KD*P crystal

•A phase shift adjustment method is proposed for pulsed laser generation.•728 ps, 0.41 mJ laser pulses is obtained at a repetition rate of 1 kHz.•The laser has high amplitude stability with a coefficient of variation of 3.2 %.
