Postcolonial masculinity and access to basic education in Nigeria

•Nigeria currently has amongst the poor access to education in the world.•Limited evidence exists on interventions that focused on masculinity and boys.•We analyse how postcolonial masculinity is constructed in education.•This research builds on thirty interviews across three different ethnicities.•The findings show that there is a hybrid masculinity shaped by local and colonial gender practices.
