•The simplified three-dimensional model of the reactor primary circuit closed system is constructed.•The effect of pressure on the density of the fluid medium is considered.•The time–frequency characteristic of instantaneous pressure surge is analyzed by wavelet transform.•The water hammer phenomenon is the main reason that causes low-band wavelet response under shaft stuck accident.
