•The China-Indonesia Joint Laboratory on High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor was co-established in 2017, designating INET and BATAN as the implementing institutions.•Joint researches include modular HTGR technology, safety and licensing, simulation technology, and localization potentials.•The program of Joint Laboratory sets a good example for future collaborations under the framework of “Belt and Road” initiative.
