Enhanced removal of phosphate by electrogenerated iron combined with mechanically activated calcite

•Mechanically activated calcite with electrogenerated Fe improved phosphate removal.•Mechanically activated calcite with electrogenerated Fe reduced the dissolved Fe.•Mechanical activation provided dissolved Ca2+.•Mechanical activation increased the surface area of calcite.•Fe-P polymer might form and adsorb onto the surface of mechanically activated calcite.
