•A one-pot reaction incorporates phthalocyanines into hierarchically porous carbon.•EPR spectroscopy shows some phthalocyanines survive heating to 500 °C.•Anionic phthalocyanine decomposes to large copper nanoparticles.•Cationic phthalocyanine decomposes to small copper nanoparticles.•Only the cationic phthalocyanine is catalytically active for cross-coupling reaction.
