Removal of methylene blue dye using shrimp shell chitin from industrial effluents

Water in all forms is essential for safe and sustainable use of resources. Increased industrial developments lead to the contamination of water resources. Discharge of effluents from industries using harmful chemical substances of organic and inorganic dyes, bleaching components affects natural water resources by degrading the water quality. In this experimentation, methylene blue dye (C16H18ClN3S) present in effluent was removed by using naturally available chitin component and Freundlich isotherm process was employed for the determination of absorption of adsorbent. Chitin component present in shrimp shell was extracted and used as absorbent material at different dosages for removing methylene blue dye which presents in effluents. Samples with methylene blue dye were analyzed for removal efficiency under various scenarios. The experimental results specifies that the amputation of methylene blue dye was effective when the active surface area of absorbent increases. Alkalinity of effluent reduces the removal percentage of dye and the experimental study states that 0.5 g chitin removes 95% of methylene blue dye with pH of 7. Removal process of dye influence with different contact time was experimented. Ability of chitin for removing methylene blue dye was explained. Adsorption isotherm studies concluded the suitability of chitin for the treatment of effluent containing methylene blue dye.
