Mussel-inspired dopamine-CuII coated polyetheretherketone surface with direct and immunomodulatory effect to facilitate osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and antibacterial ability

•Polydopamine-CuII-PEEK was prepared by a simple one-step metal-catecholamine modification strategy at ambient temperature.•DA-CuII-PEEK showed multifunction of osteogenic, angiogenic, and antibacterial abilities.•DA-CuII-PEEK initiated an early and mild M1 pro-inflammatory microenvironment to enhance osteogenesis and antibacterial ability.•DA-CuII-PEEK exhibited excellent osseointegration and antibacterial efficiency in vivo.
