•A quantitative classification of watershed rainfall spatial pattern is proposed.•The rainfall spatial patterns can be well explained by terrain and synoptic fields.•Each rainfall spatial pattern is dominated by 1–2 types of hourly rainfall fields.•The flood characteristics corresponding to rainfall spatial patterns are derived.
