•The Jiudian large quartz vein gold system occurs in the southern Jiaobei uplift.•Cathodoluminescence images show 4 generations of quartz associated with 4 stages.•The ore-fluid system is mesothermal, low salinity, low density, and CO2-rich.•Hosted in Mesozoic granite, but ore-fluids partly come from Precambrian rocks.
