Strategies for climate neutrality. Lessons from a meta-analysis of German energy scenarios

•Demand reduction is an essential strategy for achieving climate neutrality in Germany.•Main pillars: domestic solar and wind, demand reduction and imports of synthetic fuels.•No nuclear, and very limited CCS, is used in German climate-neutral scenarios.•High variance in synthetic fuel import (0 - 823TWh) and energetic biomass usage (38 - 654TWh).•Variances between German climate neutrality studies are high, but low within studies.
