•TG-FTIR and Py-GC/MS analysis of Gonghe oil shale retorting products are evaluated.•The isothermal and non-isothermal evolution curves of retorting products are given and analyzed.•Fast pyrolysis at 520°C gave more C8-C17 alkanes than at 470°C and 600°C.•520°C gave more complete volatilization and desulfurization than 470°C.
