This paper presents the hardware design and the software implementation of the Magnetic Amplitude and Gradient Probe System (MAGPy) that was specifically developed to meet the requirements of Tier 3 of the latest draft of IEC/IEEE 63184. It is a hand-held system for in situ exposure assessment and compliance testing of high-power wireless power transfer systems and other strong magnetic near-field sources operating between 3 kHz and 10 MHz. MAGPy is unique in that it not only measures the incident magnetic and electric fields, but also estimates the induced fields using the generic gradient source model. Therefore, it enables the demonstration of compliance for much stronger wireless power transfer systems than any other measurement instrument.
