Condition monitoring based on locating defects via strain gauge analysis

This paper is devoted to a new approach for condition monitoring. The main feature is an application of strain gauge analysis for geometrical locating defects. Information about exact location of a defect, intensity of excitation and its frequency provides accurate diagnostics. In this paper a mathematical model is developed, that allow to calculate location of excitation sources using real-time data about dynamic forces in supports of a machine. An electronic board and computer program for implementation the proposed method are developed. The electronics measure strain gauge data in real time and transmit it to a computer program. Then coordinates, frequency and intensity of excitation sources are calculated. Also a 3D plot of source location is available. Such an approach gives new information for diagnostic and provides new opportunities for effective defect detecting and condition monitoring of various machines and equipment.
