An innovative measurement-while-drilling method applied in construction of underground stress relief hole with more vibration events

A measurement-while-drilling (MWD) method has been proposed in our previous study, which can get the drilling depth, stress distribution of conventional stress relief hole. In this study, a drilling hole with more vibration events is selected as the study case; results show that a large number of vibration events cover up the amplitude intermissions during non-drilling, and the impact of vibration events must be removed firstly in order to continue to apply the original innovative MWD method. More importantly, the number of vibration events produced at different drilling depths and their basic characteristics are obtained, including waveform state, amplitude, dominant frequency, occurrence location, etc. The study expands the application scope of previous MWD method, and successfully monitored vibration events to provide support for explaining the relationship between the number of vibration events and stress distribution, the mechanism of rock mass fracture, and stress relief drilling.
