Introduction: Field measurements and remote sensing

This chapter provides an introduction to field measurements and remote sensing. Basic principles common to the topics covered within the book are highlighted, including in situ and remote sensing measurements (both defined in Section 2), radiative transfer, environmental satellites, error analysis and calibration/validation (cal/val), and other miscellaneous applications of field measurements for passive remote sensing. An introduction to the remaining chapters of the book is provided at the end the chapter.
