Response of rill erosion to rainfall types and maintenance on the Loess Plateau: Implications for road erosion control

•The effects of rainfall types and maintenance on road erosion were evaluated.•LH-R could generate road erosion several times higher than ordinary erosive events.•SL-R should be paid attention due to its cumulative impacts on rill erosion.•Drainage systems were confirmed to weaken road erosion.
