Soil moisture and hysteresis affect both magnitude and efficiency of root reinforcement

•Root reinforcement first increases then decreases with increasing soil water content.•Root reinforcement slightly differs between wetting and drying conditions.•Roots’ effectiveness for reinforcement becomes weak when soil moisture increases.•Soil moisture affects root reinforcement by altering the percentage of slipped roots.•Besides tensile strength, root failure mode is key for reinforcement estimation.
