•Having a diagnosis attributable to alcohol is associated with additional medical costs.•Conditions of the heart, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas make up most of the additional costs.•Certain cancers and acute conditions attributable to alcohol are also responsible for the additional costs.•Targeting those at risk of alcohol use disorder before they develop chronic conditions may help reduce healthcare costs.
