•P1 S' tail fibre allows transduction of phagemid DNA into E. coli O3, S. flexneri 2a 2457O and S. flexneri 5a M90T at a high efficiency.•Transduction of phagemid DNA by P1 with its S' tail fibre requires O-antigens of E. coli O3, S. flexneri 2a 2457O and S. flexneri 5a M90T.•LPS of E. coli O3, S. flexneri 2a 2457O and S. flexneri 5a M90T with O-antigens inhibit P1(S') transduction of phagemid DNA.•P1(S') transduction of phagemid DNA improved the Cas9 antimicrobial effect on S. flexneri 5a M90T and S. flexneri 2a 2457O.
