•Structures of a MHDCFC is optimized by a CFD model.•A membrane-less MHDCFC is fabricated.•Fuel is continuously supplied to the cell.•Type, particle size, mass fraction of carbon and temperature are studied in detail.•A high cell performance is achieved at a low temperature in the designed MHDCFC.
