•A 3D nonisothermal model is developed for high-temperature PEM fuel cells.•Two sets of experimental data are validated.•Cathode reaction is found to vary significantly across catalyst layer.•Distributions of flow, reactants, temperature, proton flux, and phase potential are disclosed.
