Abstract
The aim of this work was to determine the gastroprotective effect of L. speciosa extract and isolated compound on an indomethacin-induced gastriculcer model. The animals were divided into six groups (n = 6). Male Wistar rats were orally pretreated with standard drug omeprazole (30 mg), L. speciosa extract (200 and 400 mg/kg), and isolated morin (30 mg/kg) for 21 days. After that, on the 22(nd) day indomethacin (20 mg/kg) was orally administrated to induce gastric ulcer. To assess gastroprotective activity, the ulcer index (UI), pH, PGE2, TNF alpha, nitricoxide, and SOD were examined. The extracts of L. speciosa and isolated mo-rin showed gastroprotective effect on indomethacin-induced gastric ulcers. Significant increase in the level of PGE2, nitric oxide, and the antioxidant enzymes were observed. Results also showed increase in gastric pH, and reduction in ulcer index, and level of TNF alpha. The histopathological report also supports the healing process of the ulcer treated with test drugs.
