Temporal and spatial distribution of epibenthic dinoflagellates in the Kattegat-Skagerrak, NE Atlantic–Focus on Prorocentrum lima and Coolia monotis

•Epibenthic dinoflagellates are abundant on macrophytes at the Swedish west coast.•The distributions of Prorocentrum lima and Coolia monotis are presented.•Scanning electron microscopy and metabarcoding revealed a large diversity.•The phycotoxin producer Prorocentrum lima is a potential risk to human health.•Artificial substrates are unsuitable for quantitative sampling in this area.
