Unequal opportunities, social groups, and redistribution: Evidence from Germany

•Native German and immigrant dictators compensate for the existence of unequal opportunities for members of their own group.•Both groups do not distinguish between in-group and out-group members in the case of equal opportunities.•Only immigrant dictators transfer smaller amounts to the out-group when unequal opportunities prevail.•Only native German dictators compensate for the existence of unequal opportunities also for the out-group.
