•The antioxidant activity and prebiotic effect of oat phenolic compounds fractions were studied.•The fractions promote proliferation of Bifidobacterium spp. and Lactobacillus/Enterococcus spp.•Those fractions could inhibit the proliferation of some other gut microbiota.•Antioxidant activity and prebiotic effect are positive correlated for oat phenolic compounds.
