Simulation-based assessment of inundation risk potential considering the nonstationarity of extreme flood events under climate change

•Future intensification of rainfall was estimated using numerical weather simulations.•Multiple rainfall events with different return periods generated based on simulations.•High spatial resolution inundation simulations were implemented.•New methods to estimate future potential inundation risks were developed.•Currently rare heavy rainfall events should be considered in future risk assessment.
