•Excessive reassurance seeking is a transdiagnostic process in Depression, anxiety &OCD.•We examined the motivation to seek reassurance in depression vs OCD.•Reassurance seeking was prominent in OCD but not in Depression.•Motivation for reassurance seeking revolved around perception of threat across groups.•Interpersonal factors were prominent in neither OCD or Depression relative to controls.
