Systematical site investigation and temperature sensing in Pr3+-doped M3RE4O9 (M = Sr and Ba; RE = Sc, Y, Lu)

摘要
•Site occupation preference of Pr3+ ions in Pr3+:M3RE4O9 is studied systematically.•Two kinds of Pr3+ luminescent centers exist in Pr3+-doped Ba3Lu4O9 and Ba3Y4O9.•The change of M2+ ions has an obvious impact on the crystal-field splitting of Pr3+ ions.•An emission of oxygen defect is found in M3RE4O9 at cryogenic temperature.•Pr3+:Ba3Lu4O9 and Pr3+:Ba3Y4O9 exhibit excellent temperature sensing performance.
