Improved PET Tomographic Image Reconstruction by Employing the RISE Method

Improved tomographic images are obtained via the Reconstructed Image from Simulations Ensemble (RISE) method in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) using a clinical FDG brain dataset. We compare the RISE results with those provided by the scanner’s reconstruction software, an OSEM with PSF correction algorithm. The improvememnt is quantified by employing the Contrast-to-Noise ratio (CNR) and Full-Width Half Maximum (FWHM). Both visually and quantitatively, RISE exhibits higher CNR and lower FWHM compared to the OSEM-PSF reconstruction. These results are in accord with the noticable improvement which was observed when RISE was implemented in SPECT image reconstructions.
