•Evaluation of PD-L1 expression in 457 GEP-NEN tumour samples from 175 patients.•Immunohistochemical staining with the highly sensitive anti-PD-L1 antibody 73–10.•PD-L1 expression is common in GEP-NENs and increases with grading.•Targeting PD-1/PD-L1 may be a promising therapeutic strategy, specifically in G3 tumours.
