•A lytic bacteriophage vB_EcoM_DE7 that infects donkey-derived Escherichia coli was isolated.•The microbiological characterization and whole-genome sequencing of phage DE7 were detected.•Phage DE7 can be a potential alternative candidate to control foal diarrhoea caused by E. coli.
