•The solasodine mediated inhibition of breast cancer increased in proportion with the expression of Gli1.•Solasodine suppressed the proliferation and differentiation of MCF7 cancer stem-like cells (CSCs).•Solasodine mitigated cancer stemness of MCF7 cells by inhibiting the Hedgehog/Gli1 axis.•Solasodine reduced the expression and nuclear location of Gli1 in MCF7 cancer cells.
