摘要
The population of the metropolis city of Sudan country (Al-Khartoum) is to be about eight million people, representing 20% of the Sudanese people. This increase in population in Khartoum leads to an increase in energy need and an increase in the growth of various types of waste, especially municipal solid waste (MSW). This study aims to analyze the current trends in solid waste and management by converting waste into energy. Questionnaires were done to construe and straighten the waste management in Khartoum, highlighting the landfills and comparing them with the standards of engineering landfills. A landfill was designed in October 2017 at the College of Engineering at the University of Sudan to estimate the potential landfill gases (LFG) by measuring it experimentally. The results of the questionnaire showed great acceptance by the public, as well as poor waste management, deficiencies in the administrative system for collecting, transporting, and treating solid waste in Khartoum city, and poor environmental awareness. On the other hand, the experimental results of the landfill were very satisfactory, which proves the fact that the landfill can be an efficient resource of energy since the methane content has a good flammable value of 68%. Also, the landfill has a pH of 7.7, which is appropriate for bacterial expansion. Thus, waste-to-energy conversion can be an efficient compromise method for both the energy and waste departments.
