•The authentic sequence of Acanthaster cf. solaris RGP (Aso-RGP) was determined.•Synthetic Aso-RGP could induce spawning for A. cf. solaris ovaries.•Aso-RGP was distributed in the ectoneural and endoneural regions of radial nerve cords.
