•Xpo7 has a novel role in recovery from hemolytic anemia in normal and stress erythropoiesis.•Loss of erythroid-specific isoform of Xpo7 causes anemia comparable to that of complete Xpo7 loss.•Loss of Xpo7 downregulates expression of key factors involved in the erythroid stress response pathway (Gdf15, Smad3).
