Mirror migration and interferometric imaging utilize free-surface multiples to extend the subsurface illumination. We design a 2-D synthetic model to examine VSP imaging strategies that use P-wave primaries or multiples. First, we show a ray-tracing method to approximate the fold density of a given VSP survey acquisition for imaging using primaries or free- surface multiples. The fold-density profile shows that imaging using free-surface multiples exhibits a lower fold- density but better lateral and vertical illumination than imaging using primaries alone. Next, we compare reverse time migration (RTM), mirror RTM imaging using up- going, down-going, and both wavefields, and imaging using seismic interferometry. We also examine the sensitivity of the different methods to the migration velocity model. When the exact velocity model is used, mirror RTM with both up- and down-going wavefields produces the best image with greater illumination. On the other hand, the image obtained from seismic interferometry is less sensitive to velocity errors. Keywords: vertical seismic profile, reverse-time migration, mirror migration, interferometric imagingPermalink: https://doi.org/10.1190/image2022-3747470.1FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Second International Meeting for Applied Geoscience & EnergyISSN (print):1052-3812 ISSN (online):1949-4645Copyright: 2022 Pages: 3694 publication data© 2022 Published in electronic format with permission by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the American Association of Petroleum GeologistsPublisher:Society of Exploration Geophysicists HistoryPublished Online: 15 Aug 2022 CITATION INFORMATION Liwei Cheng, James Simmons, and Ali Tura, (2022), "Imaging and fold comparison of mirror reverse time migration vs. interferometric imaging for VSP data," SEG Technical Program Expanded Abstracts : 3594-3598. https://doi.org/10.1190/image2022-3747470.1 Plain-Language Summary Keywordsvertical seismic profilereverse-time migrationmirror migrationinterferometric imagingPDF DownloadLoading ...
