•Early medieval δ15N, δ13C and 14C results are presented in the study.•δ15N results reflect basic diet deviations between the two communities.•Contradictory 14C results of particular graves suggest fresh-water reservoir effect.•14C data provide information on early medieval chronology of the Carpathian Basin.
