•Aerodynamic noise is the primary source of noise in forage crushers.•Mechanical noise also plays important roles in forage crusher’s coupled noise distribution.•The maximum SPLs appear at the monitoring point nearest to the inlet.•The experimental and simulated calculation results show good agreement.
