•Phononic crystal (PC) point defects coupled with Helmholtz resonators is proposed.•Coupled resonator (CPCR) can realize acoustic enhancement and directional sensing.•The CPCR helps overcome the detection limit of conventional acoustic systems.•The CPCR can be used for sound source localization.
