Assessing genetic structure of Eugenia uniflora L. populations along an environmental gradient using a novel set of SSR markers

•A gradient of genetic diversity was investigated across environments.•A novel set of SSR loci was validated for E. uniflora.•The allelic composition changed gradually along the gradient.•The validated markers are highly polymorphic.•Valuable genetic diversity may be found in neglected populations.
