•Vegetation, soil matrix and soil water were analyzed in 18 acidophilous forests.•The study sites covered a vegetation-based eutrophication gradient.•The C/N ratio, Ca and Mn concentrations were closely correlated to this gradient.•Mn shortage can limit N availability by restricting organic matter decomposition.
