Acquired large colon strangulating inguinal herniation in two Arabian foals

Large colon inguinal hernias are rare, and successful outcome reports are lacking. The present case report describes the clinical presentation, surgical treatment and outcome of two Arabian foals, presented to the hospital at several weeks of age, with colic signs due to inguinal herniation of the large colon. Case 1 describes a right indirect inguinal hernia and Case 2 describes a left direct inguinal hernia, both involving the pelvic flexure. In both cases, the colts underwent surgical treatment while preserving the ipsilateral testis, recovered well and had good long-term outcomes.
